One day I’m on Facebook just checking a few things and I see a Resident Alien fan page called “Official Resident Alien Fan Page“. Being a Fan of Resident Alien I clicked to join it. People had already posted modified pictures of Harry Vanderspeigle in his typical alien situations, one was of him sleeping next to a box of pizza, and one was of his son Bridget playing in the snow with wild animals. I thought, I should contribute to the fan page in some way myself.

My first thought was “it needs to be something funny that no one has seen Harry do before.” I sat there a minute and thought “Where’s Waldo/Wally”. I could have him looking for Waldo/Wally in some funny way maybe. I looked throughout images on the internet and found a picture of the beach. Yes this would work, I then cut out a part of it and uploaded it to chatgpt asking if it could put Harry on the beach looking for Waldo/Wally. Wellll…… It looked like crap. I decided the best course of action was to make it myself. This is what I came up with.

As you can see, it’s hard to see until you look and see. The image got a few chuckles from the Facebook group, but nothing really major. I didn’t really care if anyone saw it or not, it was just a goofy idea that hit me. A one off event of untalented scribbling. All I did was make a Harry by himself staring into the distance, and placed him inside a picture that already existed.

Suddenly I had a vision of the future or maybe it was just gas, either way a new idea had entered my head. To pull it off I had to think hard about the description I was going to give chatgpt, to see if it could visualize what I was visualizing. Allow it to give me a head start into what I wanted, not do the work for me, but just an imagination boost. That idea is in the next paragraph below.

Welcome to the next paragraph below the paragraph above this paragraph. Oh yeah….. the idea. I could try and make one of those Ikea Guide pictures that are in the beginning of almost all of Resident Alien’s episodes. But what could I have Harry doing that would be funny and educational? hrm……..

*snaps fingers like Dr. Rodney McKay* I could have Harry stuffing a Turkey, but (_)_) have him ponder a different something to stuff instead. I asked chatgpt if it could help me and it said it went against it’s guidelines/policy to create something like that… So I told it to carry it’s ass and I’d just do it myself. The first thing that needed to happen was the first panel setting the scene. Harry needs to be in front of a table with a turkey. I suck at freehand drawing in Adobe Photoshop, I can make basic anatomy manipulating lines with the Liquid filter. I asked chatgpt to draw a turkey ready for stuffing and it gave me a naked turkey ready for stuffing. Downloaded it, added it to my photoshop layer. Looked up an image of someone standing up to get the shoulder dimensions first. Thought….what could Harry be stuffing into a turkey? Then it hit me! Right in the head from a shelf above, *joking*. I remembered a scene from one of the 3 Stooges Shorts where Curly is stuffing a Turkey and the instructions call for “one can of peas”, so he just shoves a whole can of peas in the Turkey. This would be a perfect thing for Harry to be confused and think that’s what a person’s suppose to do.

From that idea came this and so the warped brain of mine showed me what I had created. I had already began laughing at the possibilities that these 2 panels of comic strip could create. The Ikea Guide panels always seem to have him doing something to a random guy. Why not do what aliens are accused of doing when they abduct someone? If you guessed play chess, that is wrong. It’s obvious they play checkers instead *kidding*. The good’ole anal probe, “not recommended by most general practitioners unless under the supervision of someone that has done it to themselves at least a few times.” Harry has a can of peas and he wants to stuff them into the Turkey. Only one can of peas can fit into a Turkey at a time, what could Harry do? D. All of the Above

What is better than one can of peas? Two, two can of peas *Ah Ah AH AH AH*

I began pondering again about how Harry could manage to subdue a person so that the *cough* deed could be done. And I came up with a brilliantly fantastic British idea, I could think like an individual and totally ignore the thinking like a British person, because I am not British and do not know how someone else, but myself, thinks. What if I could have a guy being knocked out by the actual Turkey (with can inside), this would give Harry the perfect opportunity to test his theory!

I quickly went into action to figure out a good unconscious looking person would look. I may have “borrowed” an idea and “retraced” my steps into creating what looked to be a good unconscious position. Next we needed the actual Turkey near the “vic…” uh… person. The can having fallen out of the Turkey would be a great detail and this would give Harry his Eureka moment!

The scene of the “accident”, it needed something else to indicate that the person lying on the ground didn’t go’n R.U.N.N.O.F.T. So the person eventually got to see stars (stars not pictured in the picture below).

Pondering Harry’s Pondering expression wasn’t hard to think about, it needed more room on it’s own of the whole final panel scene. He needs a full table so that I can hide most of his body, *again not good at it*, and two his thinking was easy because I just looked for the thinking emoji, and then this came to me. As you can see at first glance, it’s just a reuse of the first panel. I just added a “table” and a new arm to take over from his already existing arm.

The basic look of the scene was coming into order, now all I needed to do was add more details to round out a decent overall idea of what’s going on without going too far in today’s cancel culture.
I needed to remove the Turkey from the table, removing the left arm, adding a few details like a chef’s hat was a must. Can’t forget an Apron!

Here’s what the rough version over all looked like, and as you can see, it’s far off from looking like the Ikea Guide from the Intro.

As you can see the chef hat and the apron are just basic rough drawings that only add small amounts of detail to an already non-detailed scene. I feel like I’m drawing sketches in Bruce Lee’s Tao of Jeet Kun Do.

To finish off the scene, I looked around the internet for the Ikea Guides to get a representation of Harry’s head shape, as well as the basic colors used in the fake Guide. The dotted mesh, the light reds the check mark the X mark… This is what the final scene looks like. When I see it, I immediately get the theme song in my head.

I uploaded this to Facebook and was surprised at how many people actually liked it and commented on it! WOW It’s already over 1K! What’s anyone that never will read or see this think? Oh yeah I have commenting turned off…
